California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). American sculptor, 1863-1938, also art collector and dealer. Trained at Chicago Art Institute and L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Commissioned to do statues for the Capital in Harrisburg, Pa., a statue of Lincoln for Cincinnati, Ohio. He spent the last years of his life on a monument to peace entitled "Rainbow Arch" which was never realized. Barnard supported himself by selling Medieval art and artifacts.
